What is it with people being so against AI art? Even calling something “AI art” is looked down on. Why?

Graffiti used to be seen as vandalism. Today, it is displayed in galleries as art, and many major artists today started with graffiti.

Years later, digital art was looked down on too. People said it wasn’t real art. Today, digital art is accepted as art.

So why can’t AI be art?

Yes, I know that AI today is trained on other people’s work, and I understand why that creates problems. But what if someone decides to train their own AI? An AI that isn’t trained on other artists’ work, but built from their own experience and knowledge of coding. What if that person spends months learning how to prompt, experimenting, failing, adjusting and eventually becoming extremely good at communicating exactly what they want to create?

At that point, it becomes almost like painting with words.

Why is that so difficult to see?

It is new, and people have always been against things that are new, especially in the art world. But the people who get into this early, figure it out, develop their own methods and stand against the pressure coming from almost everyone involved in or interested in art, might eventually be seen as the people who helped create a new direction in art.

I don’t use AI in my own art. Personally, I like creating the way I create. I combine traditional drawing with digital tools, painting and other techniques. I’m even careful about calling myself an artist.

I think it has become too easy to call yourself an artist today.

Yes, I know art is subjective. But I don’t think the word “artist” should automatically apply to everyone simply because they paint, draw, or use techniques that are considered artistic.

Making art and being an artist are not necessarily the same thing.
